Au commencement, il y avait le début.

The decision to go in New Zealand didn't came in one day. For a very long time I wanted to take a free year to travel and to discover the world. The idea never was to travel all time and to see as much things as possible. I had in mind to go somewhere, take time to be in contact with the population, work, and discover both the culture and the country. At the beginning I wanted to do it at 18, after the baccalauréat, but then I decided to be reasonable and I thought it would be better to finish my studies before leaving... So after 4 years in the university, here I am, ready to leave.

New Zealand always attracted me. It is at the far side of the world, it is another culture & civilization, and it remains a country where it is easy to travel, to be in contact of the population and to work. I already heard from my cousins that it was easy to get a working visa there and I decided to look for information in that way. After a few searches I went to the NZ embassy in Paris to get an Overseas Working Holidays visa. This visa allows me to work in New Zealand for one year and my goal is to do different jobs in different places to discover the country.

Yop !

It's been a while since I last came here. I in fact created this blog to share my NZ experience, and as I'm still in Paris, there was no use to write a lot.

The fact is that the crasy idea to get my driving licence came to me. I thought it would be better to have it in NZ, to move everywhere I like and to be independant (and, from what I heard, it can be useful from times to times). So I spent the past few months working on that, and as I'm not a natural born driver, it took a little time. Appart from that, I've been doing some street marketing and webmastering in Paris to keep me busy.

And now that I have my licence, I will focus on arranging my trip to New Zealand. I'm not there yet but I hope to leave soon.

Live from Singapore where I just spent the day before flying to Auckland. My plane from Paris was on time except for a stupid french guy who decided not to leave when the plane was about to go so we had to go back to the terminal for him (and his unfoundable luggage!!) to go out. The company is the best ever with more than 50 recent movies, all the sitcoms you want, good food & georgeous staff with beautiful dress.

It is my first time in Asia, so I can't compare to anything from this part of the world I know. But the city is very modern, both with its occidental modern skyline in the center and  an oriental culture with it's way to behave and to live. The zoo is known as one of the top zoo in the world and indeed it looks beautiful, very big and luxurious with numerous animals from all over the world (beautiful white tigers).

Note : if by any chance I come back here, NEVER bring a coat and a polar jacket with me as the temperature is around 30 with at least 147.03% humidity !! I think I lost 4 liters of water (per hour).

weather : sun. 30 degres

Auckland at last. Really enjoyed to pass the customs part. They are very concerned about importing food & organic stuffs in NZ and they asked me to show them my hiking shoes, to be sure that there was nothing on them that could interfear with the environment. And as there were a little dirty, they prefered to clean them for me. So they are all clean now... I wonder if I can come back there after one or two trecks for a free cleaning session !! Would be cool !!

From what I saw, Auckland seems to be a cool place with cool people. Everybody in the streets wear shorts and  sandals, everybody call you 'mate' and is friendly. I found a hostel in the center and as I slept 16 hours in the past 4 nights, I'm ready for a 24 hours night. I already booked for two days in case (who knows!!).

Weather : a little cloudy. 20 degres

Jeudi 23 mars 2006

Hi there,

It's been a few days since I arrived in NZ and everything is going perfectly well. In fact, I had to stay in the city a few days to arrange a couple of things. So I had to resign my french mobile, to get another one, to drink a few beers, to get my visa arranged, to drink some other beers, to be registred as a backpacker and to get a pass for different hikking trips. And I also bought a second hand car, which is quite cool. I will tell you more about it another time. I also spent some time visiting the city, which was also a good time.

Otherwise I met here Thomas, who is a french guy from my previous university and who is currently studying here. It was good fun to see him and we went out a few times. In my backpackers (auberge de jeunesse), I also met cool people from all over the world and there is quite the same spirit as when I was in erasmus, which is very cool !!

The kiwis are really amaysing. There are the opposite of french people and I really like it. For instance when I was looking for my car, I've been to different places and everywhere I've been I was warmly welcome. For instance, a guy I met had nothing that suits me, as all his cars were very expensive. So he called a couple of friends and asked them if they had cars to sell me. He finally gave me an address to go and we chatted for 5 to 10 minutes together. At the end he was very sorry to let me go without doing more for me... I mean, he already did a lot and in france, I would have had a 'No. now go away, I have work to do'. Another time, a lady told me she was selling her car but had no time to show it to me. So she gave me her keys (with her house keys) and told me where her car was and to come back when I had it checked. She never saw me before and already trusted me as if we were best friends. And everybody seems to be in the same spirit. Otherwise everybody is relaxed and it seems they don't know what 'stress' is! Awsome mate!

So, now that I've done everything I had to do here, I will probably leave tomorrow for the center of the north island for a 4 days treck.
You will find some picture about Auckland and about a boat trip I made. I spent a few hours on a boat that was used during the america's cup, and it was an amaysing trip. It's the formula 1 of the boat and I really had a good time there. The spider is a tunnel web, a local spider, the one that inspired Weta for Shelob in The Lord of the Ring.

And something I really don't understand is why... why do kiwis often ask me if I was the one who bombed the Rainbow Warrior when I tell them I'm french ;)

Cheers

Mercredi 29 mars 2006

Dimanche 2 avril 2006

A few days in Wellington. In fact, after the week I spent travelling and the week before in Auckland, I strangely realised that my bank accound was going red f'king fast. So as the city seemed nice, I decided to stop travelling and to get a job. As I always wanted to be a barman in a cool places, I made all the nice pubs & bars in the town and giving them cv's if by any chance there was any work possibility. Appart from that, I put an add on a fruitpicking website saying that I was looking for a job. I also noticed that a strip club was looking for a waiter. Of course I thought that this would be a life chance opportunity, and I entered the place... Unfortunately there were only looking for girls so I guess I'll never know if I was born to work in such a place! Otherwise, and this is about to become my priority this winter (summer for you), Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings director) works on a new project at the moment, which is a movie based on the Halo computer game. This movie will be done only in 'images de synthese' but as for Kong or Gollum, they are casting people to capturate they movement. I didn't knew that at all before I saw an offer in the street from a company that is casting new people for the New Zealand cinema and television industry. Of course I went there and I'll soon be a part of them. The cool part is that the Halo shooting will be this winter and the company I'm now in works with Weta Digital. As I said I am 2 meters high (and I'm almost the only one in their book), if they are looking for tall guys in the movie, there are chances that they ask me for an audition... Which would be a dream! I mean, I would pay to do that!

And one day later a fruitpicking company called me and told me he had some work for me. So as I need fast money I accepted the offer. So I'm leaving Wellington in an hour to Hastings, in the east coast of the north island.

Appart from that I also spent some time visiting Wellington, which is a really nice city, more human size and kiwi than Auckland, which is more an international business capitale. I've also been to some Lord of the rings shootings locations, which was quite fun. And... Yesterday... THE big game! I was in Wellington's stadium for a Super14 rugby match : Hurricanes (Wellington) vs Cruisaders (Christchurch). To compare, it is as if there was a chelsea / barcelona football game. All tickes were sold out 2 months ago but I succeed to have one in the black market. It was just a massive show, with 15 All Blacks players between the two teams! Awsome. Christchurch won (best team in the southern hemisphere for the 5 last years) but is was really nice to see that. Those guys are amasingly strong & fast!

From Jamaica to the world! Nightlife in Wellington is also good, especially during the weekends, and love generation is the most heard music of the country in the moment ;)

ok, as usual there is a lot more to tell but I don't have everything in mind now. And for your information, what is cool after a night drinking Guinness, is that you don't have to eat the next day :D

Weather is cloudy but around 20 degres. And I'm here (zoom out to know where I am in the country/world)

Cheers

Kia ora !

Back online after a little break. In fact I have a day off today as I hurt myself at work and have to relax a little bit. So I'm in town for the day, having a break from my countryside work.

For 10 days now I'm working in an orchard as an apple picker. Apple picking is just the most difficult job ever, and has the reputation to be harder than grapes picking. In fact I haven't got hourly rates but I'm paid in correlation to the number of apples I pick every day. And there are a lot to know to be a good picker : size, color, and lots of little stuff are to take into account when picking. You also have to stay focus on what you're doing as you're faster when focused than when you're dreaming of something else. To give you an idea, I'm picking around 2 tons of apples everyday, and I'm paid around 80 $ for that. Days begin at 7.30AM and finish at 5PM, with 30 minutes break for lunch. Then either I'm watching tv (according to my boss, if you have time to watch tv and watch other's people life, it means that your life is not full enough! so true) or going to the pub. 3 kms from where I stay there is the Roosters where they do their own beer themselves... A very good and very cheap beer (around 1.50 euros for 0.5 L) with also the possibility to bring some home (even cheaper). Such a nice place with a massive fireplace. But don't expect to meet girls here, it is only the hard working people who go there and those guys are big tuff guys!

Otherwise my boss is the coolest boss ever, and did a lot of jobs before this one. He always have something to say and answer all my questions so I almost know everything there is to know about the apple picking business :)
I also work with a kiwi in his late 40s. The guy is also cool, and it seems he still lives in 1968. He works as a wwoofer (4 hours work per day for food & bed) for 12 years, has no home, no mobile, no phone number, no credit card, never used a computer, and all he has is his car to travel around and to go in different places. He smokes weed for 28 years and just enjoy life without caring of anything else.

And in fact I'm not working toady as I my shoulder hurts me quite a lot for a couple of day. I've been to a physiotherapist yesterday and today to fix it and everything should be okay next week (she told me I got that by working too hard). The system here is quite amaysing, as when you hurt yourself (job or hobby) you can go there and it is totally free of charge (the government pays for you). Soooooo cooool. I guess I'll go for a free massage every months now :D

This week end is easter, and friday & monday are bank holidays, so no work and I'll probably go to the beach to relax a little. And today is pay day so I'll be a little crasy and I will cut my hairs and wash my car.

Weather is beautiful with 25 degres and sun everyday. I'm getting black!
location : here

Ohh, and what I really like is people who write me mails and give me news without me to ask... many thanks! You know what I'm going and I know it back !!
